In conjunction with the shows, there will be dozens of lectures, workshops, demonstrations, and social events you may choose to attend while visiting Tucson. The following is a list of the many activities going on throughout Tucson in February 2007.

Gem Classification and the Origin of Gems. Wednesday, January 31, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $150 for AGA members; $185 for non-members. The conference will cover topics such as appraisals, gemstone classification, origin of gemstones, and synthetic diamonds, and is followed by a gala dinner dance. Marriott University Park.

EVENTS
11th Annual Coyote Classic Charity Golf Tournament. Monday, January 29. The cost is $150, which includes green fee, golf cart, breakfast, lunch, beverages, a goody bag, and assorted prizes. The charity event benefits Special Olympics. Conoa Ranch Golf Club.
Annual Membership Meeting. Sunday, February 4, 6:30-9 p.m. AGTA members welcome. Tucson Convention Center , Mohave Room.
Dinner Dance and Awards Gala. Saturday, February 3, 7 p.m. The cost is $100. The evening begins with a cocktail reception followed by a seated dinner, live entertainment, and dancing. Attendees will be given the opportunity to mix and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere with hundreds of the industry’s top suppliers, designers, manufacturers and retailers, manufacturers, and retailers. Attire is black-tie optional. Marriott University Park Hotel.

FREE SEMINARS (Note: Dates and times of all seminars are not currently available).
The 4 C’s of Professionalism: Building Your Personal Brand with Diane Flora. Beginner/Intermediate workshop. Participants will learn how the proper blend of image and expertise creates confidence and how to use professional credentials to increase sales. Participants will also learn when a candid approach with disclosure issues promotes character, and how to use these skills to build a personal brand.
Alternative "B" Chart Gemstones with Kate and Fred Pearce. Beginner/Intermediate workshop. Jewelry designers Kate and Fred Pearce will offer ideas on how to create fashionable jewelry with mostly modestly priced gemstones. Maricopa Room.
Best Buys in Tucson with Richard Drucker. Intermediate workshop. Participants will discover what is available, affordable, and advisable in 2007. The session will feature information on the effects of origin on the pricing of gems. The instructor will help participants realize better margins from buying well in Tucson and thereafter. The presentation will include gem and pricing information. Mohave Room.
Colored Gemstones That Fly with Jim Fiebig. Beginner/Intermediate workshop. The presentation will emphasize buying colored gemstones that will sell easily in stores. Mohave Room.
Gem Carving, Inspiration, and Skills with Helen Serras-Herman. Basic/Intermediate workshop. The session gives participants the opportunity to understand and communicate the time, effort, and creativity behind one-of-a-kind gem carvings. Greenlee Room.
Gem Identification Made Easy: Part I with Antoinette Matlins. Thursday, February 1. The session will demonstrate how to use simple, pocket-size instruments to identify most gemstones, spot fakes, detect filled diamonds, and diamonds that might be HPHT-treated. Part I is independent of Part II. Graham Room.
Gem Identification Made Easy: Part II with Antoinette Matlins. Friday, February 2. The session will cover additional, essential portable instruments not covered in Part I. The session will also focus on techniques to quickly and easily screen for HPHT-treated diamonds. Part II is independent of Part I. Graham Room.
How to Get Covered in the News with Jeff Crilley. Participants will learn how to write a press release, how to generate ideas sure to get press coverage, when to call, how to keep reporters coming back, and more. Mohave Room.
In-Store Display with Larry Johnson. In this session, consider how elements of effective visual display can add clarity and romance to the story of gems that clients might consider. Maricopa Room.
Increase Profits with Gemstone Roundtables with Sherris Cottier Shank, Christopher Jupp, Lois Wacholtz, Roger Dery, Penny Nissenbaum, and Richard Homer. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will learn how to run successful gemstone roundtables in a two-part presentation from a team of professionals who have worked hard to perfect the process. The first hour will cover the details of how roundtables work; the second hour will offer a demonstration roundtable that will clarify the process. Maricopa Room.
Increase Sales by Empowering Your Team with Knowledge with Loretta Castoro. Beginner workshop. The AGTA-GTC is launching training opportunities for use in staff development. In this preview session, participants will have the opportunity to sample segments of gemological seminars including: Gemology, Advanced Gemology, and Lectures. Greenlee Room.
The Mines and Gemstones of Minas Gerais, Brazil with Denise Nelson. Intermediate workshop. Participants will learn about the region, the hardships and unpredictability of mining, and the intricacies connected with fabrication, as well as the worldwide impact of exports, and the “romance” of Brazilian gems. Greenlee Room.
New and Renewed Gemstone Finds with Dr. Lore Keifert. Intermediate workshop. The session will cover finds such as demantoid garnet from Iran , emerald and alexandrite from Russia , and ruby from Greenland . The information will help participants adjust pricing, get better samples, be an informed dealer/retailer. Graham Room.
New Directions in Ruby and Sapphire: From Madagascar to Tajikistan with Richard Hughes. The instructor has visited both Madagascar and Tajikistan in the past two years and will take attendees on a journey from the steaming jungles of Moramanga to the high-altitude deserts of Murghab. A visit to Badakhshan’s long lost balas ruby (spinel) mines will also be highlighted. Mohave Room.
News from the AGTA-GTC Laboratory with Dr. Lore Keifert. Intermediate workshop. The AGTA-GTC laboratory will discuss new developments in the gemstone market. Graham Room.
Pearls 101: Freshwater and Saltwater, Cultured and Natural with Betty Sue King. Beginner workshop. Participants will learn the basics on buying and selling pearls, and what their place is in today’s market. Mohave Room.
Phenomenal Gemstones with Donna Beaton and Branko Deljanin. Common phenomenal gems such as opal and alexandrite to lesser known color-change garnet or star quartz are reviewed in the seminar. The mechanism causing the phenomenal behavior will be explored and synthetic phenomenal gems will be covered. Graham Room.
Selling Gemstones: A Color First Approach with Ramona Marshall Gautreaux. Thursday, February 1 and Saturday, February 3. Participants will learn about “A Color First” approach, which may help to sell a broader range of gemstones in various price points that suits the needs of customers. Maricopa Room.
Signatures, Trademarks and Hallmarks: Recognition, Authenticity and Values with Gail Brett Levine. Intermediate workshop. Participants will learn how to recognize signatures and styles of prominent manufacturers and designers, based on the instructor’s extensive research documenting jewelry at auction. The session will also cover how quality of workmanship affects valuation and how branding affects public perception and sales. Greenlee Room.
Spectroscope with Doug Garrod. Wednesday, January 31, and Sunday, February 4. Beginner/Intermediate workshop. Participants will learn about the hand-held spectroscope, which can aid in quick identification of some colored gemstones. Participants will also discover how it can be used with loose and mounted stones as well as cut and rough materials, and how it can help separate some stones from their usurpers. Graham Room.
Treatment and Artificial Coloration of Pearls with Elisabeth Strack. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. The session will offer in-depth information regarding the increasing quantities of pearls as well as treated and artificially-colored pearls that are coming onto the market.
Yoga for Jewelers with Judith Whitehead. Thursday, February 1 and Friday, February 2, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Participants will receive tips and pointers on how to relieve stress using simple yoga poses. Wear sweats, footless tights, or shorts, and bring a hand towel.

FEE-BASED SEMINARS
Appraisals I with Cos Altobelli.
Sunday, February 4, 8-10 a.m. The cost is $49. Participants will learn basic information regarding appraisal methodology. Topics include the take-in procedure, the appraisal form, lighting, disclaimers, updates, value declaration, narratives, descriptions, and the finished document. Appraisals II with Cos Altobelli. Sunday, February 4, 10 a.m.-noon. The cost is $49. Participants will learn about multiple markets and how they apply to appraisal services and consider all types of appraisal reports, hypotheticals, and fair market value. Gem and Jewelry Appraisal Theory: Methods and Application. Thursday, February 1 through Sunday, February 4, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $550 for ASA members; $650 for non-members. The course is an intense, concentrated study of valuation theory and principles that includes the three approaches to valuing gems and jewelry; factors influencing value; appraisal terminology; literal vs. interpretative description; types and uses of appraisals; value research methods for the three approaches to value; data analysis and adjustment; use of statistics in valuation; complete vs. limited appraisal; self-contained, summary and restricted use reports; components of the written appraisal report; writing narrative commentary; and establishing an appraisal practice.
USPAP Update Course. Wednesday, January 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $175 for members; $195 for non-members. The course is designed specifically for individuals who have completed the full Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice course and only require updated information. The seven-hour update seminar covers critical changes and revisions to USPAP that significantly impact every practicing appraiser and lending officer in the fields of personal property and gems and jewelry.

Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will learn several theoretical and practical systems of applying gold to metal surfaces.
Matrix Die Making/Hydraulic Press with Sam Patania. Saturday, February 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $98 or $78 for Tucson residents. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will learn the use of the hydraulic press to cut and form metal for making jewelry.
Metal Inclusions in Glass Fusion with Brad and Jody Walker.Two-day workshop: Saturday, January 27, and Sunday, January 28, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. The cost is $300 for members; $325 for non-members. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of inclusions in glass, including metals, air bubbles, mica, and organic materials, and how to use metals between layers of fused glass.
Mokume Gane Patterning with James Binnion. Three-day workshop: Friday, February 2 through Sunday, February 4, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $175 for members; $200 for non-members. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will focus on the creation of patterns in the ancient Japanese technique of mokume gane.

Art Clay Silver: Level I Certification with Denise Gravano and Diane Bird. Three-day workshop: Thursday, February 1 through Saturday, February 3, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $525, which includes art clay silver materials, an art clay book, and the Tibara Opal Book. Participants will develop appropriate techniques and skills in order to be effective certified Art Clay Silver instructors. Certification allows participants to teach introductory and specialty Art Clay classes and qualify for professional company privileges.
Art Clay Silver: Senior Certification with Barbara Thomas. Four-day workshop: Thursday, February 1 through Sunday, February 4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $700, which includes art clay silver materials, an art clay book, and the Tibara Opal Book. Prerequisite: Level I Certification. Participants will develop techniques and skills necessary to be effective certified senior instructors. Certification, which is based upon demonstration of advanced skills and techniques, allows participants to teach introductory, level one, and specialty art clay classes and qualify for professional company privileges.
Bezel Setting in Art Clay Silver with Diane Bird. Sunday, February 4, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $175, which includes art clay materials. Intermediate workshop. Participants will explore two methods of bezel settings — a flat setting and on a ring. Two pieces will be successfully completed during the workshop.
Basic and Intermediate Opal Cutting and Finishing with Tim Thomas and Keith Olivas. Tuesday, February 6, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The cost is $899 for a six-inch Ameritool grinder; $999 for an eight-inch Ameritool grinder; and $300 with your own equipment. Participants will learn to make cutting plans for opal; practice basic cabbing techniques; identify opal types and classifications; and be introduced to cutting, sculpting, and polishing challenges.
Carving Opal: An Advanced Opal-Cutting Technique with Barbara Thomas and Tom Hay. Wednesday, February 7, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The cost is $510, which includes a motor, foot control, flex shaft, and hand piece; $370 for the rental of the above items. Participants will make carving and sculpting plans; learn basic carving techniques and use of equipment; learn opal types for carving and sculpting; and be introduced to cutting, sculpting, and polishing challenges.

Gem Identification Lab Class. Monday, January 29 through Friday, February 2, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost is $1,150. Participants will practice the testing procedures and identification skills used by GIA’s gemological experts. Participants will learn to use the following tools: a microscope, refractometer, polariscope, dichroscope, spectroscope, and loupe. Participants will also learn to identify natural gemstones, imitations, and synthetics. Coconino Room. Gemstone Treatment Update: What’s New and What to Do with Andy Lucas. Saturday, February 3, 9-11 a.m. The cost is $95; $165 for this seminar and the “Take the GIA Microscope Challenge” seminar. Participants will learn about the latest gemstone treatments hitting the marketplace while getting hands-on practice using a microscope to detect and identify the new treatments. Coconino Room.
Take the GIA Microscope Challenge with Andy Lucas. Saturday, February 3, 1-3 p.m. The cost is $95; $165 for this seminar and the “Gemstone Treatment Update” seminar. Using only a microscope and observation skills, participants will find out how accurately they can identify natural and treated gems as well as synthetics and imitations. Coconino Room.

EVENTS
GIA Alumni Auction, Dinner, and Dance Party. Friday, February 2, 6:45 p.m. The cost is $40 for alumni members; $50 for non-members. The event is being held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the GIA Alumni Association. Marriott University Park Hotel.

FREE SEMINARS
Do You Think Differentiation is About Being Different? with Tim Malone. Saturday, February 3, 9-10 a.m. Participants will learn what effective differentiation can do to improve the performance of their companies, brands, and product offerings. The session is packed with examples of differentiated jewelry offerings and will provide attendees with “no cost solutions” to improving performance and earning competitive advantage.
GIA Research Update. Sunday, February 4, 9-10 a.m. Participants will have the chance to meet a member of GIA’s research staff who will answer questions and provide an overview about the latest developments in the lab, including updates on gem identification. Coconino Room.

Almost Orchid Necklace with Lana May. Saturday, January 27 or Saturday, February 3, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. The following techniques will be explored: ndebele herringbone, peyote stitch, branches, and jewelry design. Project will not be completed in class.
Beaded Badge Holder with Carole Tripp. Sunday, January 28, 2-4 p.m. or Friday, February 2, 10 a.m.-noon. The cost is $35, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn wire wrapping and stringing techniques to make a badge holder. Participants will also learn how to use various types of pliers, crimp beads, and wire protectors.
Beaded Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Sunday, January 28, 10-11 a.m.; Tuesday, January 30, 10-11 a.m.; or Sunday, February 4, noon-1 p.m. The cost is $25, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn how to use flexible beading wire, crimp beads, and crimp covers, while making a beaded bracelet of Czech glass and metal spacer beads with a toggle clasp.
Colored Gemstone Identification with Robert James. Monday, January 29, 1-3 p.m. or Thursday, February 1, 9-11 a.m. The cost is $100. Participants who enroll in this seminar and the “Synthetic Gemstone Identification” seminar will receive a 10 percent discount. The seminar includes a presentation on the use of gemological equipment to perform basic colored gemstone identifications along with hands-on practice in identifying a variety of colored gemstones. Participants will receive a basic gem identification equipment package, including a collection of colored gemstones provided by the International School of Gemology (ISG). An ISG Certificate of Completion will be awarded.
Crystal and Pearl Knotted Necklace with Carole Tripp. Tuesday, January 30, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or Saturday, February 3, 2-3:30 p.m. The cost is $30, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn the traditional art of bead knotting while creating a freshwater pearl and Swarovski® crystal necklace.
Dusty Summer Necklace with Lana May. Friday, February 2, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. The following techniques will be explored: netting, peyote stitch, branches, and jewelry design. Project will not be completed in class.
Elegant Collar Necklace with Lana May. Sunday, February 28 or Thursday, February 1, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Lilac Mist Necklace with Lana May. Monday, January 29 or Sunday, February 4, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will learn netting, peyote stitch, and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Multi-Strand Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Friday, February 2 or Sunday, February 4, 2-4 p.m. The cost is $35, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn to use cones and a clasp to finish off a multi-strand bracelet that is made using freshwater pearls and Czech glass beads.
Open Weave Necklace with Lana May. Wednesday, January 31, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants will learn brick stitch and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Russian Tubes Bracelet with Lana May. Monday, February 5, 3-6 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Russian Waves Bracelet with Lana May. Monday, January 29 or Sunday, February 4, 3-6 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Scarf and Beads Necklace with Lana May. Saturday, January 27 or Thursday, February 1, 3-6 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Synthetic Gemstone Identification with Robert James. Tuesday, January 30 or Saturday, February 3, 9-11 a.m. The cost is $100. Participants who enroll in this seminar and the “Colored Gemstone Identification” seminar will receive a 10 percent discount. The seminar includes a presentation on how to identify each synthesizing process and what gemstones can be expected on the market. Participants will also work with synthetic gemstones using gemological test equipment, and will receive a gemological equipment package and a selection of synthetic gemstones. An ISG Certificate of Completion will be awarded.
Three-Strand Beaded Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Tuesday, January 30, 2-3:30 p.m. The cost is $35, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn how to use spacer bars, French wire, and wire protectors to create a three-strand cuff. Freshwater pearls, Swarovski® crystals, and Czech gemstone rondelles will be used to create the piece.
Traditional Bead Knotted Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Saturday, January 27, 10:30 a.m.-noon; Wednesday, January 31, 4-5:30 p.m.; or Friday, February 2, 4:30-6 p.m. The cost is $30, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn the traditional method of pearl knotting with silk cord while making a bracelet of crystal and pearl. Proper finishing techniques will be discussed and used.
Triumph Necklace with Lana May. Tuesday, January 30 or Saturday, February 5, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Two-Strand Beaded Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Sunday, January 28, 4:30-6 p.m. or Wednesday, January 31, 2-3:30 p.m. The cost is $35, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will learn how to use spacer bars and their proper placement in the design while stringing freshwater pearls, Czech glass rondelles, and fire polish beads. Use of crimp beads, crimp covers, and French wire will be discussed.
Twist Peyote Bracelet with Lana May. Tuesday, January 30 or Saturday, February 3, 3-6 p.m. Participants will learn peyote stitch and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Twisted Ropes Bracelet with Lana May. Friday, February 2, 3-6 p.m. Intermediate/Advanced workshop. Participants will learn jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.
Wire-Wrapped Bracelet with Carole Tripp. Saturday, January 27, 2-4 p.m.; Wednesday, January 31, 10 a.m.-noon; or Saturday, February 3, 10 a.m.-noon. The cost is $35, which includes supplies and use of tools. Participants will create a bracelet using sterling silver wire, beads, and semi-precious stones.
Zigzag Bracelet with Lana May. Sunday, January 28 or Friday, February 2, 3-6 p.m. Participants will learn netting and jewelry design techniques. Project will not be completed in class.

Practical Palladium with Daniel Ballard. Wednesday, January 31, 3-4:30 p.m. Participants will learn about the working properties of palladium and palladium white gold, including how to cast, fabricate, and repair the white metal. The session will include a hands-on demonstration of rolling techniques.
Ring Finishing With a Mini-Lathe with Chris Ploof. Friday, February 2, 1-2:30 p.m. Participants will discover how to best use mini-lathes to make operations more efficient and work more precise.
Stone Setting: New Approaches with Arthur Skuratowicz. Saturday, February 3, 1-2:30 p.m. The instructor will demonstrate various tools and techniques for preparing a bezel to hold a faceted stone. Participants will learn how to match the metal to the stone and how to ensure a tight fit regardless of girdle thickness or shape.
Tips and Tricks for Working with a Flex-Shaft with Karen Christians. Thursday, February 1, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Participants will discover how to get the most out of a flex-shaft, from selecting the right system to using the latest accessories and attachments.

Chain Making: Rope Twist/Herringbone Wrap with Esther Lee. Tuesday, January 30, 8:30 a.m.-noon. The cost is $115. Beginnger workshop. Participants will learn the herringbone wrap pattern and the rope twist chain pattern. Using Argentium® Sterling wire and some basic tools, participants will also create a wonderful half bangle-style bracelet.
Enameling on PMC® with Jeanette Landenwitch. Sunday, February 4 and Monday, February 5, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The cost is $325. Intermediate workshop. Supplies to bring: PMC® tools and jewelry-sized line drawings. Participants will make and enamel several PMC® pieces, while learning about the types of enamels, tools, preparation of enamels, application techniques, firing, and finishing. The class will also be a study in enamel color.
Engraving with Diane Scalese. Friday, February 2 through Monday, February 5, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The cost is $625 (lunches included). Participants will learn the building blocks of bright-cut engraving on precious and semi-precious metals, as well as engraving borders and script lettering.
Exploring PMC® with CeCe Wire. Friday, February 2 or Saturday, February 3; 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The cost is $195 (lunch included). Beginner workshop. Participants will work on a series of projects designed to illustrate a variety of techniques that enhance skills for using PMC®.

Participants will learn advanced wax-carving skills, starting with rings that have prong and channel settings, then moving on to a pendant that has a bezel pavé setting and gallery work.
Keum-Boo Basics with Christine Dhein. Sunday, February 4 or Monday, February 5, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The cost is $225 (lunch included). Beginner workshop. Participants will learn a simple and inexpensive way to add gold to their work, and create a pair of dangle earrings and a pendant by bonding 24K gold foil to silver and PMC®.
PMC® Certification with CeCe Wire. Monday, January 29 through Wednesday, January 31, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost is $425 (lunches included). Intermediate workshop. The class offers advanced skills and preparation for teaching PMC® as well as seven projects involving a wide range of advanced techniques. Argentium® Sterling: The New Metal with Ronda Coryell. Friday, February 2, 9-10:30 a.m. The technology and techniques required to work in Argentium® Sterling silver will be explored through close-up photos and a live demonstration.
A Crowning Achievement with Brad Simon. Friday, February 2, 2-3:30 p.m. Participants will see a demonstration of hand-fabricating an ornate crown to hold a color center stone with pave-set side diamonds. Filigree and other types of crowns will also be demonstrated with many fabrication tips provided throughout.
Enameling in the United States with Judy Stone. Sunday, February 4, 9-10:30 a.m. Participants will discover the resources for learning and studying enamels, see pictures of enameling work that is currently being produced, and hear about the marketplace for enamels as well as the trend and developments in the medium.
Finishing Methods with Rich Bohr. Monday, February 5, 9-10:30 a.m. Rich Bohr will demonstrate several 3M products, focusing on innovative technologies such as FX polishing wheels, diamond micro-finishing films and radial bristle brushes. Participants will learn about abrasives, adhesives, and safety products, focusing on the features and benefits of 3M technology, and will explain how speed, pressure and lubrication affect each sanding and polishing process.
Is CAD/CAM Right For You? with Scott Jones. Saturday, February 3, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Participants will learn about the various uses for CAD/CAM in several environments, including a retail store without an in-house goldsmith, a retail store with an in-house goldsmith, a wholesale house, and a manufacturing concern. Hear about the pros and cons of CAD/CAM.
Jewelry Photography and Design Management Made Easy with Cindy Lichfield and Barbara Carleton. Monday, February 5, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Using Cloud Dome and Jewelry Designer Manager, the instructors will show participants how to take fantastic photos and create professional-looking catalog pages. They will review the best cameras to use, the appropriate camera settings, the right light, and backgrounds needed to present work professionally.
Laser Welder Applications with Mark Nelson. Monday, February 5, 2-3:30 p.m. Participants will discover the variety of tasks that can be performed using a laser welder. Mark Nelson will discuss laser welding applications with gold, silver, and platinum, including ring-sizing, re-tipping, stone and pearl removal, polishing, repairing casting defects, rebuilding channels, and welding joints.
Metalsmithing Hammers: Shapes, and Function with Bill Fretz. Friday, February 2, 11:30 a.m.­1 p.m. Bill Fretz will explain and demonstrate each of the basic hammers and discusses their differences.

Floral Filigree Fantasy Bracelet and Earrings with Maria Rypan. Friday, February 2, 2:30-5:30 p.m. Cactus Room. The cost is $45. Supplies to bring: flat-nose pliers. By using a ladder foundation, participants will create a bracelet in which filigree flowers appear to float. Participants will also learn how beading wire can transform filigree into chandelier earrings.
From Inspiration to Design with Margot Potter. Thursday, February 1, 2-4 p.m. Vigas Room. The cost is $30. Beginner/Intermediate workshop. Participants must bring between three and five favorite images, and will create three different design concepts and focus on the best of the three concepts created. Images can be of any subject matter, but must be rich with design elements from which to draw inspiration.

Supplies to bring: chain-nose pliers, wire cutters, a size 12 beading needle, scissors, and beeswax. Participants will string a base bracelet and add fringe; and create a second bracelet that can also be used to convert the fringe bracelet to a necklace.
Pearl Knotting with Nick Regine. Thursday, February 1, 2-4 p.m. Papago East Room. The cost is $60. Participants will learn pearl-knotting techniques with the Tri-Cord knotting tool using Swarovski® crystal pearls, and will receive a Tri-Cord tool to take home.
Peyote Stitch Ring with Kimberly Crandall. Wednesday, January 31, 2-6 p.m. Papago West Room. The cost is $35. Beginner workshop. Supplies to bring: size 10/13 beading needle and fire line thread. Participants will create a ring using even count peyote to form the band and Swarovski® crystals and pearls for embellishment.

Supplies to bring: side cutters or nippers, magnifier, and lamp (if needed). Participants will chain stitch crystals onto fine gauge wire with a crochet hook and braid the wire. Participants will learn how to make image transfers on polymer clay and create an embossed repeating pattern. Beaded Brooch with Joanne Bast. Friday, February 2, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The cost is $175. Intermediate workshop. Participants will set a focal piece of artist glass in a nest of seed beads. The basis of the beadwork will be constructed of brick stitch.
Beaded Nosegay Earrings with Joanne Bast. Saturday, February 3, 9:30 a.m.-noon. The cost is $75. Beginner workshop. Participants will create a corsage of beads using artists’ glass and bead embroidery techniques to make a pair of earrings.
Caterpillar Bracelet with Rachel Nelson-Smith. Saturday, February 3, 3:30-6:30 p.m. The cost is $60; the price of the kit is $20. Beginner workshop. Participants will learn the basics of seed beads and bead stringing while creating a beaded bracelet.
