GIA Founding Father Crowningshield Dies

G. Robert Crowningshield, one of the founding gemologists of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), passed away in New York City on November 8. He was 87.

Crowningshield spent more than 55 years working at the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory in New York, during which time he became almost universally known and respected for his hard work and his dedication to the science.

His best-known work was in the field of spectroscopy. One of the early gemologists to use a gemstone’s spectrum in indentification, he hand-drew the spectra of thousands of gemstones, data which became the basis for the GIA’s current database of 100,000 gemstones. That database is housed in the GIA’s research laboratory, which in 1997 was formally named the G. Robert Crowningshield Gemological Research Laboratory.

Among his other contributions to the field of gemology were in recognizing color-treated diamonds, his comprehensive study of gem-quality synthetic diamonds, and his methods of identifying dyed jade. He also made fundamental advances in identification of tanzanite, amethyst, padparadscha sapphire, heat-treated corundum, and natural and cultured pearls.

We have been extremely priviledged to work with such a great man for so long,” said Tom Moses, senior vice president of the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory in New York . “He taught us how to look for the truth, and to find the core qualities in both gemstones and in people. He was an important man in our field, but he was also our friend, our teacher, and one of our leaders. He was brilliant. He was kind. He was a true gentleman. We will all miss Bob deeply.”
