Industry Responds to Tsunami Devastation In response to the call for aid in Southern Asia due to the massive earthquake and tsunami in late December, several gem and jewelry organizations are appealing to industry members to help the cause. The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA), the American Gem Society (AGS), Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) have organized an industry-wide relief effort for the victims and request industry support of this initiative, The Jewelry Industry Relief Fund (JIRF). AGTA, AGS, and ICA have joined with Save the Children, a non-profit organization for the aid of children and families, to provide relief through their Asia Earthquake/Tidal Wave Relief Fund. This is an important cause that needs support worldwide; their hope is that by joining together and working through Save the Children, the jewelry industry can show unified support. There are several ways that you can make a donation to Save the Children; anyone in the jewelry industry who pledges is asked to reference JIRF whether pledging online, by mail, or telephone, since Save the Children will be tracking donations. (The code JIRF should be inserted in the first address line of the online donation form; the second line can be used for an actual address). Click here to visit Save the Children’s Asian Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund page. Or, for more information, contact AGTA at (800) 972-1162 or Save the Children at (800) SAVE-THE-CHILDREN. Please mention the code JIRF when speaking to a Save The Children representative. Donations can also be mailed to: Meredith McWade, Save the Children, Attn: Asian Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund, 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06880. Please include JIRF in the memo area of a check. At the year-end, CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, also called upon the members of the jewelry industry worldwide to immediately do its part in supporting the relief efforts that are now under way for the survivors of the tsunami disaster. In response to questions from its members on how they can help, CIBJO has provided the following list on how to donate, as published in the press.
