News: GIA Joins World Jewelry Center - Colored Stone March/April 2007

The World Jewelry Center (WJC), planned to become one of the world’s largest jewelry hubs, recently inked a deal with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to offer GIA courses at the center.

The GIA is the world’s largest gemological institution, with a campus and laboratory in Carlsbad, California; a laboratory in New York; and 11 branches worldwide. WJC Managing Director William Boyajian spent 20 years as the president of the GIA, resigning in May 2006.

Current GIA President Donna Baker said in a statement, “We see our presence in the World Jewelry Center as a logical step in furthering the development of GIA’s education programs to support our mission of serving the public trust in gems and jewelry.”

The WJC, currently under development in Las Vegas, will contain approximately 1 million square feet of mixed-use space, including business offices for wholesale companies, retail galleries, and luxury condominium space. Construction is not scheduled to break ground until spring of 2008, but already nearly 60 national and international companies have committed to buying office space in the building.
