JA New York Sees Cautious Buying

The Jewelers of America (JA) New York show ended on a lackluster note. The show, held July 31 through August 3 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, drew approximately 13,000 buyers, about even with summer 2004. Exhibitors reported that the first day of the show saw some activity, but traffic was light on the following days.

Buyers appeared to be focused on bread-and-butter items, visiting their regular suppliers but making little effort to seek out new clients beyond that. Designers were selling signature items or pieces that were trendy but not too off-the-wall. While retailers will take a chance on more unusual designs, they will only do so at the lower end of the price spectrum. The higher end was buying much more conservatively, perhaps concerned about the state of the market.

Far and away the best seller for the companies that had them were cocktail rings with large center stones — the larger, the better, especially if embellished with details that made the piece stand out. Several companies remarked that good quality has become a major selling point, as well as an attention to detail. In necklaces and earrings, customers preferred a smaller, more streamlined look, occasionally mixing geometric shapes like circles and squares. The fashion of recent years for thin chains that can be layered or worn long continued to be a strong seller, as did pieces with moving parts or dangling elements.

In gemstones, retailers were showing a strong preference for light pastels, especially in blues and greens — a marked contrast with The JCK Show two months earlier, where the strongest colors were yellows, oranges, and pinks. Multicolored mixes, particularly the varied hues of sapphire, continued to be popular, and some customers showed a preference for bold colors rather than pastels.

JA’s next events will be the Special Delivery Show, to be held October 23-25, and the JA New York winter show, to be held January 22-24. Both events will also be held in the Javits Center.
